I wish Tor wasn't such an administrative burden on an IRC network.
Before the soapbox speaks up: it really is.
For a long time, Interlinked didn't filter Tor nodes. But we got flooding attacks originating from Tor nodes and we instituted it around 2009 (we've been around a long time, and I'm old as shit yes).
There is an answer. You set up a registration portal or request line (or people have to register without Tor, not ideal). Then set up a server as a hidden service (ideally), and DNSBL exemptions. Then you have to tell users to use SASL to login, or they'll hit the DNSBL and be kicked off. Virtually everyone using Tor winds up hitting the DNSBL because of this at least once.
Then you gotta deal with the Tor daemon flaking out on you, and keeping an eye on the whole thing and ensuring the house of cards doesn't fall down. And also monitor for abuse constantly.
All for what, 3 people who ever use the damn thing, who never stay anyway.
Why fucking bother?
It's always the people who don't even use Tor, nor ever seem to switch when you DO run a hidden service (we did for a while), that complain the most. Which just stinks of concern trolling. If you're one of those people, you should probably stop. It's not a very good look for Tor users, to be honest.
Some people recently asked for it on Interlinked. I told them to pay for it. Because we don't have the bloody money. Or the time. Or the care. For what, less than 1% of our userbase? Fuck that.
My suggestion? Get a VPN.
What I ultimately think is that this wouldn't be a problem if people didn't abuse Tor. The people who abuse it should go directly to Hell. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200. And the people who claim Tor abuse isn't a real thing have NO idea what they are talking about. At all. I grow tired of hearing that old argument. If it wasn't a real thing, then why do tor bl's exist? We aren't all part of some deep state dish pizza conspiracy or something.
@Elizafox Wait, there are people that claim nobody abuses Tor?
That's an incredible level of naïveté
and heck, I've had experience with people years ago using Tor to get around IRC g-lines/z-lines
@KS Waiting for the Tor Defense Strike Force to come out and rebut me any minute now.
