Shining in the Darkness does something I think is super cool that I don't think any other blobber does.

It has a random encounter routine, but the rate is pretty low for these kind of games. The difference is made up in environmental encounters. Certain arrangements of tiles and dungeon decorations have a chance to trigger their own encounters when you walk by them, complete with little animations and such. You can eventually learn what you expect to fight when walking through certain dungeon segments.

My favorite example: any time you approach a left-T intersection early in the game there's a chance the game will spawn a fight with a Kaiser Crab enemy, who will slowly crab-walk into the hall from the left turn before the battle begins.

@trysdyn The detail that's always been stuck in my head about it is that if you get ambushed, you don't get to see what's attacking you until the enemy's opening turn ends. They stay silhouettes while they attack, and *then* get announced as normal right before you get control again.
