@kyzh I believe so, yep; back when the service first started the whole system was designed to allow use by SMS... In the era before smartphones were ubiquitous, it was actually a pretty smart idea, anyone could interact on the go even with crappy flip-phones and whatnot.

Really, I think the only reason they keep the character limit at this point is because everyone's so familiar with it.

@KS I've been told that they have a lot of user of sms, just not in europe/us.
It would make sense for them to keep it limited to 140, especially if they made investmemt (carrier agreement, infra to support gsm network etc...)
