that's nearly 50 years after the war ended, smack dab in the middle of an era of social change; the only reason that thing was ever put up in the first place was to scare black people into submission.

@Elizafox TBH I feel a lot different feelings here than, say, honoring <pick any Confederate general here> because these are common people, dragged into a mess of a war by others?

and they mentioned that the statue's primary use now is professors using it to contextualize the war and NC's place in it at that time

@KS I'm a northerner and obviously my perspective on this is going to be different but I do not really believe these people need to be honoured with statues. Their sacrifice was not commendable. They may have fought for what they believed in, but they believed in defending slavery, with blood. I am not saying I condone the deaths of any human being, but they broke away for slavery and chose to defend that breakaway with their lives.
